How To Restore Iphoto Library On Mac

Recently I was trying to access some photo’s from my Mum’s iPhoto library on her time machine backup, but my computer doesn’t have iPhoto, it has Photos App. When I tried to open the iPhoto library with the newer Photos App, it wanted to upgrade the entire iPhoto library. Here’s how to access an individual photo from an old iPhoto library.

If you go to your home directory, there is a folder called ‘Pictures’ where Apple stores all your photos. If you have used iPhoto, then in the ‘Pictures’ folder there will be a file called ‘iPhoto Library’. It appears as one file. Don’t do this, but if you were to click it then it would try to open in iPhoto, or Photos. Instead, if you hold down the control key while you click, you will see an option called ‘Show Package Contents.’ Click on this.

Now you will see all kinds of files. Find the one called ‘Originals’ and click on it.

Now you will see a new folder with a lot of years. Click on a year, then a month, and you will see all the pictures from your iPhoto library from that month. You can then open the photos one by one, copy them, or do what you like with each picture.

...Amazing! I had tried several other recovery software but REMO was the ONLY one that found all my raw and nef images. The interface is really intuitive for photographers and the whole thing is very nicely put together...

iPhoto Library Recovery

When you delete something in Mac, it is not actually deleted; it just makes that space available for new data. Until new data is saved that sector still hold the picture data. If you haven’t saved any new data to the storage media after the act of deletion then, recovery of the deleted iPhoto library is still possible.

Remo Recover (Mac) Media Edition is a powerful recovery software that helps you recover deleted/lost digital photo, audio and video files from digital camera memory cards, Mac hard drives, USB flash drives etc. REMO Recover (Mac) – Media Edition will scan the storage media for the deleted library and recover it in few simple steps. Depending on what kind of volume the library was deleted from, REMO Recover (Mac) software uses two types of file search for recovery.

  • If the file is deleted from the unjournaled volume (like an external drive or secondary internal), it will look for the file signatures, specific identifying characteristics of that file.
  • If the deleted photo file is from the start-up disk, then the software will search for the file using journalled search.

While installing REMO Recover (Mac) – Media Edition software make sure you install it on a different computer. If you save it on the same computer from which you are trying to recover your photos it may lead to permanent data loss making your photos completely irrecoverable.

Use Remo Recover (Windows) – Media Edition / Remo Recover (Mac) - Media Edition to recover lost, deleted photos, music and video files for the respective operating systems.

Quick recovery steps to be followed to recover deleted iPhoto library with REMO Recover (Mac) – Media Edition:

Step 1: Run Remo Recover (Mac) – Media Edition Software by double clicking icon from ‘Applications’ folder or from the location where the software has been installed. Program main window will be displayed as shown in the Figure (a).

Step 2: Select the drive from the drive(s) list, and click on “Next” button to proceed. You may also just double click on the drive as shown in figure (b).

Figure (b): Drive selection

Step 3: As you click “Next” button, the program displays a window to select file types that you wish to recover as shown in “Figure (c)”. By default all the file types will be selected. Click on “Deselect all” button and select those photo file formats which you wish to recover and click on “Recover” button.

The application will now start scanning the selected drive as shown in figure (d). Please wait till the process is completed.

Step 4: As soon as the application completes the scanning process, the recovered data/file will be analyzed and displayed in a well organized data tree as shown in figure (e).
